It's the first of the Brosnan films so it's meant as a hard reboot anyways, and you can draw a direct line from Brosnan to Craig as far as tone and characters. I would say if your memories of Bond start with Goldeneye 64, just start with Goldeneye. They all have their highs and lows and honestly sometimes the lows can be a lot of fun.
Depends on what you want to know or what era you're interested in.
